1.) What exactly is it that you do in the Adult Industry?
What company do you currently work for? What's your job title
or duties?
I work for Shaw Internet Consultants, which is a company that manages a variety of different products and services, including S.I.C. Cash, Fresh Photos, and Fresh Webmaster Content. We also do quite a bit of custom content work for various clients, along with developing high end turnkey solutions primarily for companies wishing to produce reality sites. Chances are some of the popular reality sites you've seen are produced by us. In my spare time, I run AdultWebmasterGold, work with some free sites, do some search engine marketing, etc. I like to stay busy.
2.) When did you actually get started in the industry?
I got started in 1996, building free sites and AVS sites. As I researched the industry and talked to various people, I found that there was a huge lack in educational resources (at the time), so I began taking notes whenever I learned something new or had an idea. These were compiled into a site which went through several incarnations and eventually became AdultWebmasterGold. In 1998 I partnered with Jeff Dunn, who owned XXX Storage, and we formed a business that initially focused on a series of pay sites which we promoted ourselves through extensive work with search engines and feeder sites. I'd say that was the turning point that changed my job as an adult webmaster into a career. From there we branched into quite a few various directions, always looking for new business opportunities.
3.) If you could change one thing about the Adult Industry
what would it be and why?
I would stem the massive tide of misogynistic porn. I'm all for plenty of sex, and plenty of porn
but I'm a little disturbed by the fact that so many men in our society are apparently turned on by seeing a girl be roughed up, publicly humiliated and degraded, and tossed to the side. I don't necessarily have a problem with some of these sites existing, but let's have a little balance. Let's have a few sites about the men being humiliated. Let's create a few sites featuring powerful women. Let's shoot some reality episodes that show men and women with a mutual desire to have dirty sex. I honestly believe there's just as much of a market for strong women as for humiliated women (I'd be one of them!), but our industry likes to focus its attention on the male customers with inferiority complexes, who feel their own inadequacies are lessened by watching girls humiliated on their computers screens. It's a shame.
4.) What advice would you offer to anyone that's just
starting out in the industry?
Sales is key. This is a lesson I had to learn the hard way when I first got in the industry, and I was lucky to get in when profit margins were higher, the road to success was wide open, and competition was slim. If I were starting in the industry today, with the attitude I had then (build it and they will come), I would fail miserably. A great product just isn't enough. You have to sell yourself. Hit the boards (particularly Rated Hot!) and make yourself known. Write some articles. Go to every webmaster convention you can afford and network with the people you'd like to do business with. And while you're doing all of this, keep your mind on your money. I see too many people blowing wads of cash to go to conventions, and then sitting around watching the fleshy scenery. Meanwhile they're surrounded by guys who could be providing them business. Remember that this is work, and you're doing it to make a living.
5.) Tell us about any sites you might operate or that
you're most proud of.
The site that gives me the most personal pride is AdultWebmasterGold. It was the first site I put a great deal of work into, and it has stayed with me throughout the years. Because of my position at S.I.C., I haven't had a great deal of time to keep it in great shape over the past year, but Jeff and I are currently putting our heads together to create a new version that will be launched in the near future. Keep your eyes peeled!
6.)
What are your hobbies?
I do a lot of writing and songwriting. I've been working on a science fiction novel in my spare time for years, but it's difficult to stay focused long enough to see it through to the end, when I have so many concerns regarding my job. Songwriting is a little easier with my limited free time. I've recorded quite a few interesting experimental songs. I play guitar, and everything else is programmed on my pc. I plan to put together a demo and shop it around sometime soon
might as well. :)
7.) Are you married? Have a girlfriend or boyfriend? Or
both? *giggle*
I have a beautiful wife and a six year old daughter. Unfortunately, I think all of my girlfriends have broken up with me.
8.) How much time would you say you spend working in a
day and do you take regular vacations?
I spend 10 to 11 hours a day at the office, and usually work some more at home. I've never had a vacation in my life. I'm hoping to take one by the age of 60.
9.) Is there anything personal or professional that you
would like to add or that you would like others to know about
you?
With elections looming in the U.S., I'd like to confess that I'm a liberal, and I'm not ashamed of it. I wish more liberals would join me in coming out of the closet.
10.) What's the one thing you like best about Rated Hot?
The community. It's very friendly, and most of the people who frequent the board are genuinely nice people who are willing to help each other out.
